New Code Games

Being “in the zone” can be an incredible feeling. Whether it’s that feeling of making a presentation “just right”, or being in a negotiation when things “just work”, or hitting the golf ball “perfectly”, when things work for us, when we are at our very best, it can be amazing.

New Code Games are typically used to generate Content Free High Performance States. These valuable states can then be used to enrich and upgrade our state in situations that we are facing – whether it is public speaking, creative thinking, problem solving or being out on the town – or to help us handle aspect from our personal history that have been getting in the way.

The Alphabet Game is usually the first one that I usually share. Rhythm of Life and Breath of Life are pretty straightforward too. The NASA Game is pretty well-known too, likewise the Croydon Ball Game. But there are always more.

Jack Carroll created Alphabet Touch as a variation of the Alphabet Game when he was working with a client who was blind. Though it’s easy to learn, scalable, and does away with the need for writing up charts altogether. Daryll Scott developed another overlapping the Alphabet Game with the Stroop Task.

Juggling itself has many of the characteristics of the content free high performance state. It uses a huge amount of our brain by virtue of its stimulation of our vestibular system, left and right motor cortexes – and for most people, it’s not a ‘normal’ activity, so the risk of overlap is minimized. Plus it’s fun – and my 16mo son loves watching me practising! The main limitations are the lack of engagement of our auditory loop (auditory short term memory) and the lack of easy scalability.

We have been experimenting with juggling while rhythmically reading off the letters of words. But not just left to right: Instead, the first letter, then the last letter, then the second letter, then the second last letter, etc. So, for example, D, L, A, E, N, I for Daniel.
Likewise, we have tried using variations on table tennis where the way the ball is hit is manipulated – combining aspects of Alphabet, NASA and Croydon Ball Games. It’s just limited to situations where you’ve got a table tennis table, though fortunately there are usually quite a few of those around 🙂

Faking it really works!

Why is it that sometimes you can feel powerful, confident and certain about what you’re doing, though other times you don’t?

And, more importantly, what can we do about it? If you have an important presentation or interview coming up, how can you get yourself into state quickly and on demand?

By taking on the body posture of confidence and power, you can transform the way you think and feel – in as little as just two minutes!

Our friends at HBS found that by holding one’s body in an expansive ‘high-power’ pose for as little as two minutes stimulated the release of higher levels of testosterone and lower levels of cortisol.

And it wasn’t just a little effect either. After just two minutes putting their feet up on the desk and leaning back with their hands behind their heads, testosterone – the hormone of power and dominance – was up by 19% and cortisol (the stress hormone) was down by 25%! And they could feel the difference.

After just two minutes in a high-power posture, people felt more powerful and were willing to take more risks.

Know that the way you move your body will affect your biochemistry and the way you behave. So the next time you need to perform, check your body posture.

Excellence: Do you just go there or do you live there?

Over dinner with an Aikido Master last week, discussions lubricated with plenty of Tsingtao and sake turned to the founder of Aikido. Morihei Ueshiba, known as O’Sensei, developed Aikido through last century, as much a philosophy as a martial art that has experienced spectacular success around the world. And yet it was noted that none of the students of O’Sensei’ have come close to surpassing the founder.

Some suggest that subsequent generations will be led by those biased against students who might surpass them, and that the ‘next great leader’ will only arise when the talent of the leaders is so corrupted that they don’t even recognize superior talent. But let’s hope not.

Besides, I was curious as to what was so special about O’Sensei, rather than the excuses.

One of the observations made by this master was that at some point, O’Sensei had become “enlightened”. While somewhat cliched, it occurred to me that perhaps one difference was that whereas other Masters might gain access to a powerful state of being, O’Sensei lived there.

I noticed something similar while I was in Brighton last month. There were Trainers, Trainer Assistants, and Trainer Candidates who had access to NLP techniques, methods and strategies. But there were a precious few who lived NLP. Who didn’t “do” NLP sometimes and live ‘normally’ the rest of the time, but who just experienced NLP as they lived their life.

Perhaps this is similar to the “personal congruence” that John Grinder and Carmen Bostic St Clair so actively promote the New Code of NLP.

On The Genius Project, I wrote the following:

In the past two weeks, I watched my four-month-old son learn to blow raspberries. Inspired by reading that this would be good for his language development (seriously!), and knowing that his mother can’t blow raspberries, I made the sacrifice and regularly blew raspberries at him. He was surprised at the start, then he started laughing. Then he started trying it out for himself. It took a while, and he ‘fell over’ a bunch of times. Even now, his raspberries are particularly sloppy. But he watched me and he did it – today, he can reliably exit a room and blow me a raspberry!

Interesting skills are usually the most difficult to transfer. We can learn Newton’s Laws, but it’s another story entirely to learn to think as Newton thought. Those tacit and almost invisible skills that sometimes leave behind traces of brilliance are the ones where we lack the language to teach the skills. Often we lack the explicit knowledge as to what is being done at all. Yet an infant can learn without language. They just look out at the world with eyes wide open and a willingness to explore, experiment and experience.

In NLP terms, we could call this modeling. Modeling is how Dr John Grinder learned to do Gestalt Therapy from Richard Bandler and Frank Pucelik, the process yielding what we now know as the “Meta Model”. Modeling was then applied by them, and the original study circle, to learn from Virginia Satir, Milton Erickson, Frank Farrelly and others, thereby creating the original foundations of NLP.

NLP Modeling (or NLPModeling) is more than just Strategies, and seems mostly taught explicitly and comprehensively as part of New Code NLP trainings.

Types of NLP training

A few years ago, I completed an MBA. It was hard work but the path was pretty straight-forward, with a number of compulsory subjects and some electives. And once I finished, I graduated and could put “MBA” after my name.

There are three basic levels of NLP training.

The first basic level of training is “Practitioner”. An NLP Practitioner will typically have been exposed to between 7 and 18 days of NLP training, focused on learning the fundamental patterns, techniques and attitudes.

The second basic level is “Master Practitioner”. Building on the Practitioner, Master Practitioner usually involves an extra 6-18 days of training. Sometimes this is focused on learning additional “advanced” patterns, while other trainers will focus Master Practitioner on Modeling.

The third basic level is “Trainer”. NLP Trainers Trainings are usually conducted over about three weeks, and is less focused on improving “NLP skills” and more focused on how to present NLP material.

In a sense, the fourth level would be the Graduate Certificate of NLP.

Richard Bandler’s Neuro Hypnotic Repatterning

One of the first things that stands out to me as I watch Richard Bandler training in Neuro Hypnotic Repatterning is just how similar it is to New Code NLP.

Richard and John worked together for about seven years at the start of Neuro-Linguistic Programming before moving in their individual directions. Richard went onto brand his work as Design Human Engineeringâ„¢ and Neuro Hypnotic Repatterningâ„¢ (and at one point launching litigation in a failed attempt to register a Trademark for NLP as a whole). John has been very active in continuing to develop NLP, the product of which can be labelled as New Code NLP, working with Judith DeLozier initially and more recently Carmen Bostic St Clair. While New Code NLP and “Richard Bandler NLP” are very different on many levels – and each is in the pursuit of modeling excellence – there can be some striking similarities. For example:

What is New Code?

I’ve had a few people asking me, “What is New Code” and while I’ve given answers in the past, it’s a good time to answer it again.

Dr John Grinder and Dr Richard Bandler developed NLP together through the 1970s. They discovered (and created?) many fantastic skills and opportunities for change, learning and growth.

After Grinder and Bandler started working independently from each other, each explored the field further in their own way. Bandler created Design Human Engineering and more recently Neuro Hypnotic Repatterning. Grinder developed New Code NLP, first with Judith DeLozier in Turtles All the Way Down and more recently with Carmen Bostic St Clair in Whispering in the Wind.

New Code NLP

It was great to have Elsie and Marc able to attend the session with Dr John Grinder and Carmen Bostic St Clair a few weeks ago, and I’m hoping to post a review from them here shortly.

The training was focused on “New Code”. While there are many forms and styles of NLP training in the world, New Code is the one most closely associated with NLP Co-Founder Dr John Grinder. As highlighted by this article from Michael Carroll (from NLP Academy in the UK), New Code focused more on personal congruence and the connection with your unconscious mind, developing “high performance states” and “content free” work. You can also find more information on New Code with Chris and Jules Collingwood’s Inspiritive in Australia.

We had a session in China NLP in January focused on New Code, but after reading Michael’s article, I thought it was worth mentioning again!
